Day 1 First touch of Tibet

Welcome to the holy land! “Tashi Delek” (Tibetan saying of good lucky and full of happiness) finally meet your lovely Tibetan tour guide either at the train station or airport and start your wonders in Lhasa.

Overnight at Lhasa

Potala Palace
Potala Palace

Tips: The airport in Tibet you are landing is the Gonggar Airport, which is around 68km away from Lhasa city, taking around 1 & 1/2 hours; the train station is 15km away and taking 20min driving.

Minor headache, loss of appetite, sleepy could be the common symptom on the first arriving day. Take it easy, drink more water or fruit juice, have very good rest, take some anti-AMS medicine if needed. Better acclimatization for the high altitude is to ensure you have a wonderful trip for the following days.

Day 2 Lhasa landmark wonders [B+D]

Once you step on the holy city, you cannot move your eyes from the massive white red structure - the Palace of Potala. It is not only the cardinal landmark of Tibet; it is the traditional residence of the Dalai Lama.

Jokhang Temple is the most scared shrine in Tibet which was built in 7th century and located at the heart of old town of Lhasa. The circuit around it called Barkhor Street. The bustling street is the lively place where you can see how the Tibetans daily life is.

Tips: Barkor Street is a good place to purchase souvenirs. Tibetan knives, carpet, little stuff…ask if the shop can ship it if needed. It is also the place for local people to getting together, tea houses are scattered all around, find one and seated in the corner, strong yak butter tea combine with the Tibetan incense smell, you will find yourself lost in the roof of the world.

Day 3 Lhasa Buddhism exploration [B]

Today we are going to explore two of the most important monasteries in Tibet. Around 8km west Lhasa, the Drepung monastery, was once the largest monastery in the world. It will be good experience to follow the pilgrims’ pace here. Later in the afternoon, we will drop a visit to Sera Monastery. 5km north Lhasa, Sera is another important Gelugpa monastery in Lhasa (other than Drepung).

Drepung Monastery
Drepung Monastery

Tips: Drepung is also famous for the dramatic unveiling of a giant thangka during the Shoton Festival (first week of 7th lunar month, usually happened either in July or August.)

The highlight at Sera is the lama debating, which is the daily practice between the monks with questions and answers of what they have learned every day. Usually it starts from 3pm and ends at 5pm Monday till Saturday (unavailable on Sundays). The schedule could also be changed during the festivals or big events in the monastery.

Day 4 Moving west forward to Shigatse [B]

Today we will start the trip early in the morning. At the Kambala Pass (4794m), you will get the first sight of the holy lake - Yamdrok tso. We will follow the bank of the lake and driving another 30 min to the town of Nangartse.

It is a town for tourists to stop, English set menu, cola, soda, and coffee, all are telling you it is an ‘international’ small town at the remote corner of Tibet.

We are driving on the southern Friendship Highway, watching the views of snowcapped mountains, small local villages, green farmland on the valley of barren hills, leisure moving yaks on the road, children lying against the wall & watching the tourists passing by, they are wondering where they are coming from, what the outside world like… After 270km (4.5 hours’ drive), we will arrive the ancient Gyantse Town. Visit the stupa of Gyantse Kumpum, which is renowned as the most stunning architectural wonder in Tibet. Taking another 90km drive, we will reach our final destination - Shigatse, the second largest city of Tibet.

Overnight in Shigatse

Yamdrok Lake

Tips: It is 360km from Lhasa to Shigaste via Gyantse, taking around 6 hours’ drive. The well paved asphalt road makes driving easier. The weather can be changeable on the plateau, one warm coat or Jacket will be highly suggested to take even you are coming in the summer. And to lighten your trip, you can leave large luggage at the hotel in Lhasa.

Day 5 Shigatse / Rongbuk Monastery [4900m] / E.B.C [5150m] [B]

Morning visit the Tashilumpo Monastery, we will move forward to today’s final destination - Everest Base Camp. Cross over Gyatsola [5200m] & Gawu la pass[5250m], you might feel minor headache. Standing at the Gawu la pass, the panorama of the world’s highest peaks of the Himalaya Ranges show you all the best : Mt. Makalu [8463m], Mt. Lotse [8516m], Mt Everest [8844m], Mt. Cho Oyu [8201m] and Mt. Shishapama [8020m] you just cannot move your eyes away and you will wonder how mighty the Nature can be.

Following the dusty road, we are getting closer to the Everest.

Rongbuk as the main Buddhist center in the valley, it is the highest monastery in Tibet and thus the world. Here is a good point to enjoy the north face of the Mt. Everest. Sunset at Mt. Everest is another highlight of today if in good weather.

Overnight at local tent guesthouse or Rongbuk guesthouse (dorm beds only)

Mt. Everest

Tips: The guide need to process the PSB permit at Shigatse before heading to the Base Camp. Your passport will be needed and it will take a few minutes. This will be handled either on Day 4 or morning Day 5 depending on when you are arriving in Shigtase on Day 4.

There’s a 100km dusty road up to the Base Camp, be ready that you are taking a free massage for 3hrs around.

Today we are planning to overnight at the highest altitude of 5150m, minor headache, dizzy, your body will ask for extra oxygen. If you are feeling worse, do tell your tour guide immediately, it will help to move down to a lower altitude rather than struggling against a whole night there. Over challenging the nature is not a good idea. Serious AMS can be lethal.

Temperature drops down a lot from daytime till the night at base camp, down jacket or sub-zero sleeping bag equipped nicely for a base camp trip.

Day 6 Rongbuk / Zhangmu [2150m]

If lucky enough to catch the good weather, you can also enjoy the sunrise at the Everest Base Camp. The clear weather in early May till early June, later Sept. till early Oct. makes it the best season to view the best sights of the Everest. You can take the local bus from the tent camp to the Base Camp. Later this morning or early afternoon, we will continue our trip to the border town - Zhangmu.

Standing at the Thongla pass [5120m], enjoy the picture scenery of the surrounding peaks of Shishapangma [8020m], Cho Oyu [8201m], Menlungtse and Gauri.

Overnight at Zhangmu

Tips: Zhangmu is a typical busy border town. Noisy, crowed, bustling streets stay till late night. The accommodation here is just like the motel or hostel style, you will be still highly suggested not to have high expectation on the facility of the hotel here.
